Four Levels of Piano
'PIANO' is a nostalgic poem composed by D.H Lawrence. The poet has beautifully presented a strong pull of childhood memory in the poem. In one evening, a woman sings a song for the speaker to attract him. But instead of getting attracted to her, the melodious song of the piano draws him back to his past life. He remembers his childhood and becomes emotional. The memory takes him back to old Sunday evenings of winter which he used to spend sitting on his mother's affectionate lap inside the cassy room listening to her hymns. He does not get entertain by the lady's song. So it turns to be useless to use her emotion and enthusiasm in playing the piano. He finds his childhood days more attractive than the song and wishes to go back to the bygone days. Missing his past life, he weeps like a child.
2. INTERPRETATION :
The poem may be intending to focus on the power of music. Music can touch our hearts . sometimes it makes us happy and sometimes it makes us sad. It can change our mood. The poem might be also talking about Universal human nature to be nostalgic. The speaker becomes emotional and weeps like a child by recalling his childhood.
3. CRITICAL THINKING :
The poem is impressive and interesting. The poet has beautifully presented the universal human nature. However, I have some questions in my mind about the poem.
i) Does a mature man weep like a child simply for the past?
ii) Is everyone's childhood memorable like that of the speaker?
4. ASSIMILATION :
After reading this poem, I realized that music is powerful which can distract us at any time and situation. Sometimes it happens to me as well some songs make me cry and some songs fully entertain me.
