Two Long-Term Problems: Too Many People, Too Few Trees

Moti Nissani's essay, "Two Long-Term Problems: Too Many People, Too Few Trees," addresses two major issues that are intertwined and threaten the future of life on Earth: overpopulation and deforestation. These problems are caused by human actions, and if we do not take timely action to address them, they could have catastrophic consequences.

Overpopulation is a major issue because it leads to the depletion of natural resources, pollution, and climate change. For example, Nissani notes that the population of Nepal has grown from 9 million to 23 million in just 50 years. If this trend continues, the population of Nepal will reach 368 million in 140 years. Overpopulation is a problem that is not limited to Nepal, but is happening all over the world. As the population grows, more natural resources are consumed, leading to pollution and changes in the climate.

Deforestation is another major issue that is caused by the growing population. As more people are born and the population increases, forests are cut down to create new farmland and housing. The demand for beef from wealthy countries in the West also contributes to deforestation, as forests are turned into pastureland. In addition, the demand for wood and paper products in developed countries drives the destruction of forests. Deforestation has many negative consequences, including landslides, floods, droughts, desertification, loss of biodiversity, and depletion of the ozone layer.

While it may be difficult to reverse the negative effects of overpopulation and deforestation, it is still possible to mitigate their impact. Education, especially for women, and information about family planning can help to reduce population growth. In addition, changes in the way we use wood and other natural resources, such as the use of smokeless stoves in Nepal, can help to reduce deforestation. However, Nissani reminds us that we must be brave and clever enough to make these changes if we hope to effectively address these two long-term problems.
