New Year Four Levels

Four Levels of New Year

                                                                 - Parijat
                            Translated by Padma Devkota

1.LITERAL COMPREHENSION:
The poem, 'New Year' was composed by Parijat and translated into English by Padma Devkota.
The speaker assumes that the New Year has arrived when she sees the wind chasing, March away and the sun climbing up the hill. When she sees the nightingale bird flying here and there and the buds of the flower appear, she knows that a new year has arrived. She feels happy and excited with the arrival of New Year which is supposed to bring new hopes, fulfillments and opportunities but when the speaker sees the mason wasps returning to their same old nests lazily, which is in the dark and dirty ceiling of her house, it reminds her of her own unfulfilled dreams and expectations of the past. The memories of old dreams and incomplete past make her feel upset. However, she wishes to create something better for the future out of those sad memories.

2.INTERPRETATION:
The poem "New Year" may be trying to tell us that we should complete our incomplete work in new year. We should try to achieve our unfulfilled goal and desire. If we create new goal, new desire, new idea, it again may be incomplete.

3.CRITICAL THINKING:
The poem is very beautiful and interesting to read. The poet becomes happy because of the arrival of new year. But later she becomes upset recalling her past unfulfilled dream and expectation. I have some question regarding the poem:
1)New year is determined by date. How can she claim the arrival of a new year by looking nature?
2)How could the poem compare her life with Mason Wasps?

4.ASSIMILATION:
Before reading this story, I used to set new goal and desire in every new year but after reading this poem I decided to achieve my old desires and goals in upcoming new year. I will not set new goal but try to reach to the goal.
